Engagements about spatial vision for District Six commence

The City of Cape Town’s first meeting about the Local Spatial Development Framework, or local neighbourhood plan, for District Six is taking place on Tuesday, 22 September 2020.

Although the City is not involved with the restitution process, we are responsible for creating an overall spatial vision for District Six in collaboration with the District Six community, and other residents. The purpose of this spatial plan is to re-establish this once vibrant neighbourhood, to create a sense of belonging, and to establish a multicultural community,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Marian Nieuwoudt.

The City will refine the Local Spatial Development Framework with the assistance of the District Six community and other Capetonians during an extensive engagement process over the coming months.

The details of the introductory meeting are as follows:

‘Our very first meeting is a historic occasion and I am encouraging residents, businesses, civil society, and interested and affected parties to please participate. I want to assure all that we are committed to working together with the Western Cape Government, the National Government who is taking the lead for the redevelopment of District Six, and all of our residents. Once completed, we want to see a neighbourhood at the foot of Table Mountain that is vibrant and beautiful, inclusive, and sustained by a strong local economy,’ said Alderman Nieuwoudt.
